Hello Families,
Two days of rain day "holidays", and I can finally update you on our classroom happenings! We've had an exciting 6 weeks getting to know each other. The children have learned the routines nicely and have made new friends. I can't begin to tell you how much I am enjoying our class! The children are curious and hard-working, and you can be assured that some great things are going to happen this year!
Thank you for your help with homework. Our homework most often consists of spelling and math practice. However, it is vital that you know that NOTHING I send home is more powerful than daily reading! Whatever you can do to encourage your child to curl up and read will reap great rewards. Your child may bring home library books and classroom books everyday, so if you don't see books coming home, please let me know and we'll fix this.
In math, we are working on two-digit addition with regrouping and counting money. Your child is learning to count change to $1.00. We are learning about the Creek and Cherokee Native Americans of Georgia. In science, we are examining the different states of matter. In reading and writing, we are evaluating the structures of stories and learning to ask questions to ourselves as we read and write. The children are writing narratives at this time and are learning to write like authors and develop plots with endings.
Second graders spend time learning about nutrition this year and I am encouraging them to start looking at nutritional labels in order to determine what makes a snack healthful. Please guide your child in choosing healthful snacks for school and before long he or she may choose them without our help!
I'm sending home a book order form. Please get it back by the due date so I can place the order. I 'll try to send home an order form once a month. Books are great rewards and Scholastic has good values!
Thank you for all you do! Happy Fall!
Fondly,
Kim Pennington
