Welcome to Our Class!!

Image_thumb_gardening009 Welcome to the 5th grade!  I am Mrs. Pace and I will be your guide through the year.  I am so excited about beginning a new year.  Do you know what the three states of matter are?  Do you know why the Civil War took place?  Do you know how to create a complex character?  We will be learning lots of interesting things and these are just a few examples. It is sure to be a year of learning, exploring, and fun!  If you have ANY questions, concerns, or comments, feel free to contact me by email.

Have fun and happy learning!!

What are we up to?

WEEK OF May 5, 2008

We will be busy this week!!!  We will be completing the DRA reading assessment this week, begin a novel study on Maniac Magee, and we will be working on our Reports. We will be writing reports on the topics we are studying in Science, for example, earthquakes, volcanoes, tornadoes, just to mention a few!  Math workshop is busy with review and we will be exploring pi and the area of  a circle and volume.  Remember, volume= length x width x height.  We will begin a new unit in Social Studies- World War II.  This should be a very interesting topic for our students.

Remember that Field Day is Friday, May 9th!

Be aware that students will have the Drops in the Bucket Math worksheet every night for homework and their Spelling Packets are due on Friday.

Thanks!

A. Pace

Book of the Month

April Book of the Month is....

Doorbell

The Doorbell Rang, by Pat Hutchins.  Ma has made a dozen delicious cookies. It should be plenty for her two children. But then the doorbell rings--and rings and rings.  After you have read this book, tell me what you think!  You can also go to the Book of the Month website for fun activities!  Happy Reading!

MATH Challenge

Fred could very well be a profession basketball player when he gets older.  At 16 years old, he's already 72 inches tall!  His younger sister, Mary, is not far behind.   She's 68 inches tall.  Use the Web site below to convert their heights from inches to feet!

Math Cats

Answer these questions:

1.  What are Fred's and Mary's heights in feet?

2.  Find the sum of their heights in inches.

3.  Now, convert your answer in #2 to feet.

CHALLENGE:  It's exactly six miles from your house to the library.  How many feet would you have to walk to the library and back home?

**Answer these 3 questions correctly in a comment, and you will receive extra credit and maybe even a homework pass!!**

Walking Journal

Animated_bookworm

Welcome to our class's Walking Journal.  This is the place where we can post comments about books that we have read.  Please take time to read our responses and make some comments of your own.  We look forward to seeing what you have to say about our books that we enjoy in class!

Images We are in the process of reading No Talking by Andrew Clements.  It is a story of a group of 5th grade boys and a group of 5th grade girls competing to see which group can go two days saying the least amount of words.  Who do you think would win at Powers Ferry?  Why?  What would be the challenges of not talking for 2 days?

SOCIAL STUDIES Scavenger Hunt
