We've Come a Long Way, Baby!

The Library Media Technology Center

also known as The Library or The Media Center

With the rapid deployment of technology, libraries aren’t what they used to be. Our students can use the library for a wide array of activities, from reading for enjoyment to creating multimedia projects. Students may borrow books for pleasure or research, take accelerated reader quizzes, publish works on the computer or with video equipment, and enjoy a story during their visit to our Library. Students can perform research with traditional print resources as well as utilize Online Resources, which can put a variety of the most current information right at their fingertips. We've come a long way since the card catalog, our library circulation system will be going online by the end of the school year where it may be accessed from home.

Welcome to our Virtual Library! I am glad you are visiting the blog for the Powers Ferry Media Center. I have been the Media Specialist at Powers Ferry Elementary for nine years nows. Previously, I taught for four years in the middle grades before receiving my Masters in Library Media Technology. I love working in the Media Center. We have all sorts of exciting activities happening here every day. In addition to getting to use the newest technology, I especially enjoy working with the students whether we are choosing books for reading pleasure or producing multi-media projects. Cobb Online Resources

RESEARCH AT HOME
What's all the talk about?

All Cobb County Schools now have access to online research databases!  Your research library is now open around the clock, 7 days a week!

Have students been spending hours searching for information on the World Wide Web in order to complete their homework assignments?  Locating needed information should be much easier now that the Cobb County School District online resources are available to our students from their home computers.

Databases such as the GaleNet Discovering Collection (articles and biographies covering the core curriculum areas of history, language arts, science and social studies), Electric Library Classic (full text articles from over 800 magazines and newspapers), Grolier Online (Lands and Peoples in addition to the encyclopedia), World Book Online, and GALILEO (the Internet-based virtual library of the University System of Georgia) have been purchased for our students’ use both at school and at home. The County online resources can be accessed at mailto:http://www.cobb.k12.ga.us/~mediaservices/OnlineResources.

How to Obtain Passwords

Please encourage students to stop by the Media Center for a list of database passwords so they will be able to use these valuable information sources from home.  Students may also access the databases from computers in the Media Center before and after school, or during class visits or on teacher passes during the school day.  In accordance with School Board Policy IFBGA (http://www.cobbk12.org/~boardpolicies/I_Policies/ifbga_p.htm), all school computer use must be related to the student’s course work, and no “net surfing” or e-mail access is allowed without the prior permission and direct supervision of the student’s teacher.
