Hello

Hello! My name is Margaret Braswell, and I am a Reading Recovery and EIP teacher at Powers Ferry.  This is my 15th year teaching in Cobb County and my 9th year at Powers Ferry.  In addition to Reading Recovery and EIP, I have taught first and second grades.

EIP

EIP stands for "Early Intervention Program", and we have several EIP teachers at Powers Ferry.  This year I am working with one first grade classroom and two second grade classrooms during Reader's Workshop.  I go into each of these rooms daily and work with guided reading groups.  The classroom teachers and I work together to make sure that all

Reading Recovery

Reading Recovery is a short term early intervention program for struggling first grade readers and writers.  Powers Ferry has had the Reading Recovery program since 1997.  There are currently two Reading Recovery teachers at Powers Ferry - Ms. Braswell and Mrs. Brania.

Reading Recovery students receive 30 minutes of one-on-one instruction daily with Ms. Braswell or Mrs. Brania.  Each lesson begins with the reading of at least 3 familiar books on the child's level.  Next, the student composes and writes a short story with the teacher helping as needed.  The lesson ends with a new book each day.  First, the teacher introduces the new book to the child, and the teacher and child look through the book together.  Then the child reads the new book with the teacher providing support as needed. Reading and writing skills including comprehension and phonics are taught throughout each lesson.
